Babylon has fallen - has fallen
Babylon Has Fallen - Twice - but is it Iraq or the USA?
After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority; and the earth was made bright with his splendor. 2 And he called out with a mighty voice, "Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! It has become a dwelling place of demons, a haunt of every foul spirit, a haunt of every foul and hateful bird; 3 for all nations have drunk the wine of her impure passion, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have grown rich with the wealth of her wantonness."
We have seen from the previous chapter, the vision of the harlot riding the beast, that “Mystery Babylon” was identified as America. So could this be referring to the collapse of the WTC on 9/11 and if so, the fact that “is fallen” is repeated could be a reference to two towers falling, one after the other?
The alternative is that the angel is referring to the fall of modern day Babylon in the war just finished in Iraq and the repeat of the words is to stress that this is the second time in history that “Babylon has fallen”.
On the other hand, the repeat of the phrase “is fallen” might just be poetic in nature and not be of any significance at all!
On the face of it, the reference to foul spirits and dwelling place of demons would seem more likely that this is a description of post-war conditions in Iraq, rather than the site of the WTC after 9/11.
Let’s continue with the passage to see if it continues to confirm this thought.
4 Then I heard another voice from heaven saying, "Come out of her, my people, lest you take part in her sins, lest you share in her plagues; 5 for her sins are heaped high as heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities. 6 Render to her as she herself has rendered, and repay her double for her deeds; mix a double draught for her in the cup she mixed. 7 As she glorified herself and played the wanton, so give her a like measure of torment and mourning. Since in her heart she says, 'A queen I sit, I am no widow, mourning I shall never see,
Babylon was Israel’s great enemy in the 7th century BC and most of the nation of Israel was taken into captivity in the original Babylon around 600 BC, where they were virtually imprisoned for 70 years. So the call to “come out of her” would be more relevant to Iraq than a call to come out of America.
The reference to mixing “a double draught for her in the cup she mixed”, is an obvious reference to revenge for the 9/11 attack, which was the reason for the war in the first place; to exact the retribution George Bush had promised the American people at the time. This is urging a “double dose” of revenge!
Quite who is urging this quite un-Christian behavior is uncertain but it was not, as we have seen, God who was pouring out retribution on Iraq but the USA, under the direction of George Bush. The narrative here must be a “tongue in cheek” observation because there is no way it could have found its way into this narrative by mistake and no way a Christian, much less God, would urge such barbaric action, is there?
But the real mystery now is the part which says: “As she glorified herself and played the wanton, so give her a like measure of torment and mourning. Since in her heart she says, 'A queen I sit, I am no widow, mourning I shall never see”.
The subject until now has been Iraq/Babylon and initially reading through this section, one assumes that She/Iraq/Babylon is still the subject and is “the queen” referred to! But “As she glorified herself….” is actually a new sentence and a new verse. Even without a copying error sometime in the past, the subject could, and indeed does seem to have changed, from She/Iraq/Babylon to She/America/Babylon. And this little anecdote, just like the one which elsewhere mentions the “marriage of the lamb”, is a clue which signifies a change and indicates who the new subject is!
Let’s recap on the “Marriage of the Lamb”, which appeared to be more of a “partnership” between George Bush and Tony Blair, when they were dressed in “fine white linen”, which was defined as “the righteous deeds of the saints”, as they went to war with Iraq over the alleged necessity to rid the world of Weapons of Mass Destruction.
Perhaps we have slightly misunderstood “The Marriage” and what was intended was that the “marriage” involved not George Bush and Tony Blair but, more specifically, America and the UK which were, of course, the only two countries involved in this war. The UN was not involved on this occasion!
So, assuming a change of subject, America would be the queen, whilst the UK, the relative minion, or “lamb” of the partnership, would be the “husband”. America now sits as a “queen” but not a widow, because her husband, the UK is not dead and, indeed they are still very much “partners”. America has “no sorrow” about the actions she has taken to crush the life blood from Iraq!
Continue reading and now it is obviously dealing with 9/11 and not the war in Iraq!
8 so shall her plagues come in a single day, pestilence and mourning and famine, and she shall be burned with fire; for mighty is the Lord God who judges her." 9 And the kings of the earth, who committed fornication and were wanton with her, will weep and wail over her when they see the smoke of her burning; 10 they will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say, "Alas! alas! thou great city, thou mighty city, Babylon! In one hour has thy judgment come."
The World Trade Centre, burned with fire in a single day and the traders of the earth wept! That great city (as defined by the angel, where the whore of Babylon looks out over the harbour) in one hour (the time it took for the first tower to collapse) has thy judgement come!!
11 And the merchants (traders) of the earth weep and mourn for her, since no one buys their cargo any more, 12 cargo of gold, silver, jewels and pearls, fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet, all kinds of scented wood, all articles of ivory, all articles of costly wood, bronze, iron and marble, 13 cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, oil, fine flour and wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and slaves, that is, human souls.
It would be a stretch of one’s imagination to believe that all of America’s trade with the rest of the world was dependent on, or originated from, the World Trade Centre in New York City. But the inference is quite clear that worldwide trade in many commodities was carried out from there. There is no doubt that the focus has changed and the repeat of the words “is fallen – is fallen” now obviously refers to both Babylon/Iraq falling and Babylon/WTC having fallen.
Continue reading and the rest of the dialogue obviously continues to refer to the WTC:
14 "The fruit for which thy soul longed has gone from thee, and all thy dainties and thy splendor are lost to thee, never to be found again!" 15 The merchants of these wares, who gained wealth from her, will stand far off, in fear of her torment, weeping and mourning aloud.16 "Alas, alas, for the great city that was clothed in fine linen, in purple and scarlet, bedecked with gold, with jewels, and with pearls! (the clothing of righteous deeds again and the colours of the Christian papacy) 17 In one hour all this wealth has been laid waste." And all shipmasters and seafaring men, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off and cried out as they saw the smoke of her burning, "What city was like the great city?" 19 And they threw dust on their heads, as they wept and mourned, crying out, "Alas, alas, for the great city where all who had ships at sea grew rich by her wealth! In one hour she has been laid waste. 20 Rejoice over her, O heaven, O saints and apostles and prophets, for God has given judgment for you against her!"
21 Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, "So shall Babylon the great city be thrown down with violence, and shall be found no more;
In the attack on 9/11 the Twin Towers were certainly “thrown down and were found no more” which is a good description of what happened to the twin towers but would be a strange metaphor for a country being destroyed.
22 and the sound of harpers and minstrels, of flute players and trumpeters, shall be heard in thee no more; And a craftsman of any craft shall be found in thee no more; and the sound of the millstone shall be heard in thee no more; 23 And the light of a lamp shall shine in thee no more; And the voice of bridegroom and bride shall be heard in thee no more; For thy merchants were the great men of the earth; and all the nations were deceived by thy sorcery. 24 And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints, and of all who have been slain on earth."
Now look at all the unique references in the final part of this chapter. It would be true of all buildings destroyed that: “The light of a lamp shall shine in thee no more”, but it obviously refers to a building rather than a country. But the most relevant quotes which identify the WTC building are these last of what will and will not be found there anymore. These all uniquely apply to The World Trade Centre:
- A craftsman and a craft shall be found in thee no more - This is a direct reference to trades/trading companies no longer operating from the building.
- The sound of harpers and minstrels, of flute players and trumpeters, shall be heard in thee no more As a famous center for concerts the reference to harpers and minstrels is obviously very relevant.
- The voice of bridegroom and bride shall be heard in thee no more - The restaurant in the World Trade Centre was called “Windows on the World and was famous for its special events, especially weddings.
- And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints, and of all who have been slain on earth." A tribute to all those people, labelled “prophets and saints” who died within the buildings destroyed on the day.
So this is an announcement that both Babylon/Iraq and Babylon/WTC have fallen but the transfer from one to the other is not immediately obvious until you notice the dividing “clue”.
